If so much as a tiny railing is in the way, the enemy won't trigger the Overwatch from a soldier only a few feet away.

It's like Snapchat took one look at those who aren't very good at strategy games, who complained the loudest that XCom movement commands were final and a soldier could get fucked into oblivion, and decided to lean in the complete opposite direction with having newly spotted enemies interrupt movement with no way to turn it off.Īlso, PP's Overwatch is gnarly. No, you don't have to stop and ask for new orders for each of those 5 enemies you just spotted.

Yes, I'm sure I still want you to move to this full cover that's going to protect you from incoming fire. I only just recently decided to give PP a go, and the absolute biggest sticking point is units stopping their movement commands every time a new enemy is spotted.

If they could learn from each other, imo the perfect experience is somewhere in the middle. I wish Firaxis did more for XCom 2 with dlcs, but like you mentioned, the modding community almost did their job for them there.Īt the end of the day, I find myself liking different things about both as well. I still hate the ancients dlc, and usually turn it off. The dlcs help with this, but they introduce their own problems, mostly balance related, though most of the dlcs balance out their nonsense with decent enough content. PP artificially inflates itself by using "enemy with tentacles vs same enemy with gun". I like PPs array of weapons, though I miss the enemy variety of Xcom. giving you the flexibility to shoot, move, shoot, etc, in whatever order you want is objectively better for strategy. I do agree that PP has a better movement system. Again, a happy medium between the two would be perfect. Neither is bad imo, I just like one a hair better. Don't get me wrong, I love the world wide story, while Xcom, especially with the Chosen, is more character driven. I like the story of PP a lot, but I prefer the story of XCom 2 because it is a bit more zoomed in, and the characters feel a bit more connected. Also, the "preciseness" of PP bullet tracing works against me more than it helps me when it comes to overwatch. Several times a character can "see" an enemy, but not target it, because of hip firing a heavy weapon in half cover, or whether the character wants to pivot left or right around pillar, or the infamous "a railing is in front of the barrel of the gun and you are unable to lean 1 inch to the left". A happy medium between the two games would be perfect for me. I wish there was a little less WYSIWYG in PP actually. I guess I just wish that PP might take a few more pages from the XCOM2 playbook, or that XCOM 3 will learn the right lessons from PP. I think it is fair to see that XCOM2 feels more polished for sure, and there is a bit less "cheese". XCOM2 "feels" cooler which is neither fair nor objective, but there it is.

The graphics are better, of course, but so is the sound design, the music, the character design, and (of course) the mod scene. However, XCOM2 seemed better in almost every other way, which is equally depressing. XCOM2's aiming system also sucks even more after PP's superior WYSIWYG system. It's really hard to go back to such a simplistic system after all the rich tactical choices the TU system gives. The first thing I noticed after starting up is how restrictive XCOM2's action system is compared to PP's turn unit system. Since I was still in the mood for squad based tactics I decided to play XCOM2 WOTC again with the new Long War mod, and now I find myself dissatisfied with both games.

I finally "finished" Phoenix Point for the first time, and actually enjoyed it quite a bit after a rough start.
